This site leaves something to be desired, but it's an interesting exercise anyway. Enter your income and the Global Rich List calculator will place you on a global spectrum of wealth. Even at U.S. poverty level wages, Rob and I are in the top 14%.
How rich are you?

Would a better indicator would be the PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) which compares how much an annual income in a specific currency can actually purchase?
Another interesting measure is the HDI (Human Development Index) which considers more than just purchasing power but other social measurments such as life expectancy and education.
Regardless, your point still holds. Most Americans are wealthy in relative global terms.
